Strunjan Landscape Park – A Treasury of Nature and Silence

The Strunjan Landscape Park is an exceptional natural area where sea and land meet. Within the salt-pan landscape lies the only marine lagoon on the Slovenian coast, known as Stjuža, home to more than 270 bird species. Numerous rare plants and animals coexist here in perfect natural balance. The park’s most striking feature is the Strunjan Cliff – steep walls rising up to 80 meters, continuously shaped by wind and rain. A special place is also held by the Strunjan Salt Pans – the northernmost in the Mediterranean, where salt is still produced using traditional methods.

The Strunjan Cross – A Symbol of Hope Above the Sea

On the highest cliff of the Adriatic, rising 80 meters above the sea, stands the Strunjan Cross, dating back to the 17th century. For centuries, it has guided sailors and signaled the proximity of a Marian sanctuary. According to legend, a miracle occurred here when the Virgin Mary appeared above Moon Bay, calming the stormy sea and saving sailors from a violent tempest.

Moon Bay – A Natural Gem Beneath the Cliff

Moon Bay is considered one of the most enchanting natural attractions of the Slovenian coast. The path to the bay follows a scenic educational trail offering stunning views of the cliffs and the blue Adriatic. At low tide, visitors can walk all the way to the beach and experience the untouched beauty of this peaceful spot; at high tide, the route becomes a true adventure. The bay is popular with hikers, while photography enthusiasts find it a perfect location to capture a spectacular sunset over the sea.

Visitor Center – Gateway to the World of Strunjan Landscape Park

In the heart of the Strunjan Salt Pans you will find a modern Visitor Center offering excellent insight into the natural and cultural features of this unique area. Visitors can explore the exhibition “Park of the Sea”, which presents coastal life and the park’s rich biodiversity through engaging displays, photographs, and models.

The park can be explored independently or by joining a guided tour. Guided tours are available by prior reservation and offer a wonderful opportunity to discover the area through the stories of an expert guide, revealing many fascinating and lesser-known tales of Strunjan.
