Piran – A Magical Coastal Town Born of Salt

Piran is only 25 km from Ankaran and is one of the best-preserved historic towns in Slovenian Istria. It enchants visitors with its numerous churches, museums, and galleries. Tartini Square – The Heart of Piran

The central Tartini Square is the lively heart of the town and one of the most beautiful urban spaces in Slovenia. It is dedicated to the famous violinist Giuseppe Tartini, whose statue proudly stands in the middle of the square. Until the late 19th century, the square served as a harbor for fishing boats. Today it is surrounded by elegant Venetian palaces, restaurants, and cafés. Did you know? Benečanka – A Symbol of a Love Story

One of the most recognizable buildings in Piran is the Benečanka, a beautiful Gothic palace from the 15th century. According to legend, it was built by a Venetian merchant out of love for a woman from Piran. Its red façade and richly decorated stone windows represent the finest example of Venetian Gothic architecture in Slovenia. Did you know? The inscription “Lassa pur dir” – “Let them talk” – carved on the façade symbolizes free love.

 

Church of St. George – Guardian of the Town and Viewpoint

Standing on the hill above the town is the Church of St. George, the patron saint of Piran. Its bell tower, modeled after St. Mark’s Campanile in Venice, offers one of the most stunning views of the entire coast. At the very tip of the peninsula stand the Piran Lighthouse and the Church of St. Mary of Health, forming a picturesque scene.
