Debeli Rtič Landscape Park – A Natural Treasure of the Slovenian Coast

Debeli Rtič Landscape Park is located at the very end of the Ankaran Peninsula, just 5 km from Ankaran. It is one of the most important areas for preserving biodiversity along the Slovenian coast. The heart of the park is the namesake cape with a powerful flysch cliff, natural rocky shoreline, and layers of an underwater reef, together forming an exceptional natural mosaic. The Cliff and Underwater Reef – The Power of the Sea in Stone

Rising above the sea is a cliff up to 36 meters high, composed of fragile layers of flysch exposed to constant erosion and abrasion. At its base stretches a picturesque natural coastline, while beneath the sea surface lie impressive formations of an underwater reef, shaped by wave action. Sheltered among them is a rare sandy dune – a true rarity on the Slovenian coast.

The Underwater World – A Rich Marine Ecosystem

In the shallow coastal zone up to five meters deep thrive underwater meadows of nodding cymodocea and lush communities of Cystoseira algae. Rare and endangered species live here, including the fan mussel, long-snouted seahorse, Mediterranean stone coral, and the loggerhead sea turtle. Debeli Rtič thus hosts one of the richest marine ecosystems in Slovenia.

Green Hinterland and Vineyards Above the Cliff

The gentler slopes of the cliff are covered with heat-loving shrubs, while its edge is bordered by a forest belt of black hornbeam, oak, and manna ash. A distinctive feature of the park are the vineyards, among which lies an island of native oak forest – a remnant of the dense vegetation that once covered the entire peninsula. Debeli Rtič uniquely combines nature, tradition, and tranquility by the sea.
