Through Koper to the Beach in Izola

A moderately challenging yet scenic coastal cycling route from Ankaran through the old town of Koper and onward along the former Koper–Izola Coastal Road to the beach in Izola. This bike route combines city streets, a coastal promenade and a short climb toward Izola’s old town centre, making it a great option for slightly more experienced cyclists looking for a coastal cycling route in Slovenia.

Cycling Route Description: Ankaran – Izola

• Starting point: Resort Adria Ankaran.
• Difficulty: moderate, mixed-terrain bike route (city streets, coastal promenade, short climb).
• Distance: approx. 12 km one way (approx. 24 km round trip).
• Riding time: 40–50 minutes one way, at a relaxed pace.

Route Step by Step:

1. Ankaran to Koper: from Resort Adria Ankaran, follow the coastal bike path toward Koper.
2. Through Koper’s old town centre: ride past Tito Square and the Cathedral, continuing on toward Žusterna.
3. Žusterna – start of the old Coastal Road: at the city beach and water sports centre, join the former Koper–Izola Coastal Road, today a dedicated cycling and pedestrian zone right along the sea.
4. Along the coast to Izola: the route passes the spot where the cruiser Rex sank during World War II, and continues all the way to Svetilnik Beach in Izola — a perfect spot for a mid-ride swim.
